Cervical Screening

Cervical screening plays a vital role in preventing cervical cancer by identifying changes early, before they develop into something more serious.

At The Maxwell Practice, cervical screening is performed by experienced GPs.

Our cervical screening (smear) tests

Standard Cervical Screen

The standard cervical screen test involves checking for the presence of certain high risk types of a virus (HPV) which could go on to cause cervical cancer if left untreated. If the virus is detected, then a cytology test will be performed to examine the cells in your sample for abnormalities.

£215

Cervical Screen with Cytology

This test includes the cytology regardless of whether HPV is present, so your cells will be examined for any abnormalities. This more comprehensive test provides additional reassurance.

£330

How does this compare to cervical screening available through the NHS?

The NHS offers the standard cervical screen to women aged 25-49 years every 3 years, and to women aged 50-64 every 5 years. With our private service, there are no restrictions on how often you can be screened, so you can choose to have more regular screening.  You can also opt to have the more comprehensive cervical screen with cytology for extra peace of mind.

Preparation for your appointment

To ensure the best possible sample, please follow these guidelines before your smear test:

• You should not be bleeding on the day of your appointment.

• Avoid using a spermicidal (sperm-killing) or oil-based lubricant in the 24 hours before your appointment.

• Do not use any vaginal creams or pessaries in the 48 hours before your appointment.
