About the coil (IUD/IUS)
What is a coil?
A coil is a small, T-shaped device that sits inside the womb. It is most commonly used as a highly effective, long-acting and reversible form of contraception. It can also be used as part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to provide the progestogen component for women using oestrogen.
There are two main types of coil:

Hormonal coil - IUS (intrauterine system). This releases a small amount of hormone locally to prevent pregnancy. It can also help reduce heavy or painful periods. The most common type is the Mirena.

Copper coil - IUD (intrauterine device). This uses copper to prevent pregnancy. It does not contain any hormones so your periods will continue.
