Meningococcal B

Meningococcal disease is a name for any infection caused by bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis. It most commonly presents as Meningitis, sepsis and septicaemia (blood poisoning) which are very serious, potentially life-threatening illnesses.

This vaccine protects against bacteria called “Neisseria meningitidis" type B.

The Vaccine

Who can have this vaccine?

People over 2 months of age.

Doses required

2-3 doses

- Children aged from 2 months to 2 years require 3 doses. The doctor will advise on the right schedule based on the child's age. The NHS schedule recommends it is given at 8 weeks, 16 weeks and at 1 year old.
- Adults and children over 2 years require 2 doses with at least 1 month between doses.

How is it given?

This is an injection in the upper arm or thigh.

Other information

There are no data in adults above 50 years of age. These patients should ask their doctor to advise whether it is beneficial to have the vaccine.
