Meningococcal ACWY

Meningococcal disease is a name for any infection caused by bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis. It most commonly presents as Meningitis, sepsis and septicaemia (blood poisoning) which are very serious, potentially life-threatening illnesses.

This vaccine protects against bacteria called “Neisseria meningitidis" types A, C, W-135 and Y.

The Vaccine

Who can have this vaccine?

Adults, adolescents, children and infants over the age of 6 weeks.

This vaccine is usually offered to teenagers in school as part of the NHS vaccination programme.

Doses required

1-2 doses

- Infants aged 6 weeks to 6 months: an initial 2 doses 2 months apart, and then a booster dose at 12 months.
- Over 6 months: 1 dose

How is it given?

This is an injection in the upper arm or thigh.

Other information

The need for a booster dose is not currently determined and therefore not recommended. However, a booster at least 5 years after the last dose may be considered for some people at high risk of meningococcal disease.
