Infant 5-in-1 - Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio, Pertussis, Hib

This vaccine protects children against 5 diseases:

Diphtheria is a highly contagious infection that affects the nose and throat, and sometimes the skin. Diphtheria can be a serious illness and sometimes fatal, especially in children, if it is not treated quickly.

Tetanus is a serious, life-threatening condition caused by bacteria getting into a wound.

Polio is an infectious disease caused by a virus that can spread from person to person and cause paralysis.

Whooping cough (pertussis) is - a highly infectious disease that affects the airways. It causes severe coughing that may lead to problems with breathing. The coughing often has a ‘whooping’ sound.

Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) is a bacteria which can cause very serious illnesses, particularly in young children, such as meningitis, septicaemia (blood poisoning) and pneumonia.

The Vaccine

Who can have this vaccine?

Children aged bewteen 2 months up and 3 years old. It is not suitable for children over 3 years.

Doses required

3 doses

- There should be at least 4 weeks between doses. The NHS schedule provides this vaccine at age 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks.

- A booster dose of Hib (given in a combination vaccine with Men C) should be given at 12 months.
