Cholera

Cholera is an infection that can cause severe diarrhoea. It's not found in the UK, but there's a very small risk of getting it while travelling in some parts of the world.

The Vaccine

Who can have this vaccine?

Adults and children 2 years+

Doses required

2-3 doses

- Children aged 2 years to under 6 years: 3 doses 1-6 weeks apart. For continuous protection, a booster dose is recommended within 6 months.

- Adults and children over 6 years: 2 doses 1-6 weeks apart. For continuous protection, a booster dose is recommended within 2 years.

How is it given?

This is given as a drink.

Other information

The course must be finished at least 1 week prior to potential exposure. Food and drink should be avoided for one hour before and one hour after each vaccination.
Possible temporary side effects: fever, digestive problems, headache.
